Build It Green’s GreenPoint Rating System

US Green Building Council’s LEED Certification

From the Executive Director

I am happy to announce that RCD is the recipient of Acterra’s 2010 Business Environmental Award for Sustainable Building, Small Organization.  The award recognizes the positive impact of our commitment to green building at Oxford Plaza in Berkeley, Fox Courts in Oakland, and Shinsei Gardens in Alameda.  These projects were built green from the ground up and reflect a new standard for affordable housing. Congratulations to all who worked with us on these great properties!

In awarding RCD this honor, Clare Malone Prichard, Team Captain of the Business Environmental Awards Judging Committee stated, “Construction of even one LEED Platinum building is an achievement very few organizations in the world can claim. Building and then maintaining a LEED Platinum multifamily residential building, numerous other highly rated green buildings, and retroactively upgrading most of your existing multifamily residential units throughout your portfolio, all the while being a nonprofit organization, is something very few organizations in the world can claim. Resources for Community Development is a leader in this field by showing that even a small nonprofit, charged with the building, maintenance and running of thousands of units of low income housing, can produce superlative, green building efforts on limited resources, while still placing value to the social equity components of their charter.”

We also just received word that Oxford Plaza is GreenPoint Rated at 136 by Build It Green.  Fox Courts received a GreenPoint Rating of 143.  These ratings demonstrate very high standards of energy efficiency, resource conservation, indoor air quality, water conservation, and community.  We expect that Shinsei Gardens will also be GreenPoint Rated as well as LEED Platinum and Bay Friendly Landscape certified.

If you are as excited about the impact of building green as we are, please plan to attend the grand opening celebration at Los Medanos Village in Pittsburg on May 12 to see the latest addition to our affordable and green housing.

The past year and a half has seen unprecedented growth in our housing portfolio and, for the third year in a row, we have been named to Affordable Housing Finance’s Top 50 Affordable Housing Developers.  We are now serving over 3,000 people!  Talking with a resident at Villa Vasconcellos when they hosted a fabulous Opening Doors to Homes walk for us, I heard the most rewarding accolade of all, “This is my home and I love it here.”

Thank you for your support of RCD’s work and the people we serve. Listed below are several events that provide opportunities to visit our properties. I hope to see you soon!

Members of the J.H. Fitzmaurice team cool down after walking from Villa Vasconcellos to Heather Farm and back during Opening Doors to Homes, our walk for affordable housing. Huge thanks to the team for the Fitzmaurice sponsorship of all RCD’s 2010 programs!

Thanks to everyone for a strong show of support at Opening Doors to Homes. 102 people and several dogs enjoyed great company and a picture-perfect day for a walk.

Please consider a small monthly pledge – it adds up to more opportunities for affordable homes and services that revitalize our communities.
